GALINA’s EXPERT OPINION
Malabsoption and Folic acid/B12 deficiency: Patients with Celiac disease, Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease can experience weakness, fatigue and anemia as a result of nutrient malabsoption, which can cause Folic acid and Vitamin B-12 deficiency.*
Azulfidine and Folic acid deficiency: Use of anti-inflammatory drugs like azulfidine can decrease absorption of folic acid from foods, which can cause anemia. Therefore, supplementation with folic acid is beneficial.
Drugs and B12 deficiency: Antiacids such as Mylanta, Maalox, Tums, Rolaids, acid reducing drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPI) such as Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium, Protonix) and Diabetic drugs such as Metformin can also inhibit B 12 absorption.*
Intestinal Surgery and B12 deficiency: People cannot properly absorb vitamin B12 after small bowel resections (especially terminal ileum – the last part of the small intestine). It happens quite often in patients with Crohn’s disease.*
IBS and B12 deficiency: The majority of IBS patients have overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine which prevents full absorption of B12.
B12 deficiency usually goes hand in hand with Folic acid deficiency. I recommend to supplement with both (B12 and Folic Acid).
