GALINA’s EXPERT OPINION: I recommend vitamin D supplement in a liquid form suspended in medium chain triglycerides for fast and easy absorption. In my research, I found 2 problems with Vitamin D supplements:

1. Most Vitamin D supplements that come as a hard pill or a dry capsule lack the fat needed to fully absorb vitamin D (which is fat soluble vitamin).

2. Vitamin D supplements that do contain fat often use GMO soybean oil, unless stated otherwise by the manufacturer. A turnoff for anyone who wants to avoid GMO foods.

Vitamin D deficiency in IBD, IBS and Celiac disease:

– Celiac disease patients are at risk for vitamin D deficiency that can lead to softening of the bones (osteomalacia).

– IBS patients can have a problem with poor absorption of vitamin D because foods naturally high in vitamin D such as (dairy, fatty fish, liver, egg yolks) can trigger IBS symptoms (bloating, gas and diarrhea).

– A study from The Digestive Disease and Nutrition Center, in Buffalo, New York, has found that 62% of patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis had vitamin D deficiency.

  • Vitamin D can help to reduce diabetes complications for people already sick with diabetes.* Vitamin D restores insulin sensitivity and improves blood sugar control.*
  • People with IBD (Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s) are deficient in vitamin D due to poor absorption.*

Dr. Gilaad Kaplan, a gastroenterologist and IBD researcher from The University of Calgary states: “When we look at patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and check their vitamin D levels, they are usually deficient in Vitamin D.” He recommends supplementation for IBD patients with vitamin D even in the summer. Vitamin D aids intestinal absorption of nutrients including calcium, which creates strong immunity, strong bones and teeth.

  • Vitamin D may protect against prostate cancer, breast cancer and colon cancer.*

I recommend my patients to consult their doctor to accurately measure their vitamin D levels using the blood test called “25(OH)D” (aka: 25-hydroxyvitamin D) to determine proper dosage.
